@HondaCrf450r. I bit the bullet and moved to the multimatic 255. I dont have a lot of gripe with the switch but i dont weld 8/5 anymore. I only do random repairs.
I’ve had my Multimatic 255 for about 3 years. Upgraded from a Lincoln 180. Amazing machine. I love the pulse Mig. Great for this stuff and filling gaps. It stick welds as good as my Miller Trailblazer. My only complaint is there’s a lot of space between the hole opening where the Mig gun enters the machine in the front. This makes the wire get dusty and dirty real quick so my Mig gun liner tends to get clogged faster. I wish Miller would install something like a brush/wisker deal around the opening to help with dust. I have my wire passing through a foam ear plug just before my rollers. Seems to do the job. Fine machine though. It’s done some pretty heavy duty jobs for me.
No suben yo la tengo lammillermatic 255 y no sube la alimentación de alambre siempre hase contacto antes de llegar al material que se va a soldar basura
I am with you on that one. Used to be Miller all the way till they started raising prices and lowering quality Now they produce overpriced junk. I just got a no name brand Chinese Tig 350 3 phase delivered to my house for $800. No noisy fan, pulse etc.. Welds like a dream. F Miller.
Interesting perspective. I bought 3 for my shop and have been happy with them. For not much more that the price of the Millermatic you get TIG and Stick. It performs well on all 3 processes. I agree, it is frustrating when they leave off really useful features that would be cheap and easy to implement with these computerized welders. ESAB and Lincoln do the same
I had a very similar experience with a Multimatic 255 four years ago, ran for a month, main board burned out. The retailer took it back for a month and it finally came back fixed.
You can lay down some quality Mig welds with this machine. I have the push pull gun for Aluminum but it would of been nice to have that AC feature for Tig welding Aluminum. One other thing that would be nice is a fitting for 100% Argon and another fitting for your CO2/Argon bottle instead of switching hoses. I can probably plum it in and put a splitter with a switch to go from bottle to bottle.
The newer multimatic 255 with the digital screen, its my first miller. My first mig machine as well, I like it a lot! It's easy to read even at a distance (my eyes are not getting better), and user friendly enough even a nooblet like me can do some workable welds while I improve on my technique. It was not without a few challenges though, it had a glitch that I had verified with miller and my local airgas reps that I purchased it from. Nobody could explain why it did what it did, but works fine now. The glitch: Welds fine in all auto modes, but in mig it would not initiate arc while in manual. It only activated wire feed ang triggered the gas solenoid. I didn't discover it for a while because being new, I used the auto modes a lot. When I showed it to a very experienced welding friend of mine just before I was about to pack back into its box to return, it started to work the way it should. Solid interface, and reasonably user friendly even for a person new to welding.
I’ve had mine for a year now and it’s awesome! I weld a lot of aluminum and it does great
Im thinking pre heat will do wonders from my first welds with my new 255 millermatic. With .035 and 100 % CO2. Thinking about getting a gas mixer to get the mixes for the different welds. I know the mixer is expensive. I have 100% CO2 and 100% Argon. Dont really want to have to get 2 or three other mixes to have the capabilities for the pulse feature and 75/25 or 90/10 you are correct i will have to weld with it and learn the new machine. My old linclon 200 powermig. 20 plus yo was still doing a great job. But like a kid in a candy store. Couldnt resist having all blue machines in the shop. It definately is a learning curve going from an A through F and wire speed setting to the almost infinate setting capability of a machine that is much more capable of a machine than i am a welder. I do recommend getting linclon L-56 wire. Don't belive there is any better wire for the general repairs i do though. Find out what wire works for you the best. In short, i love the 255 millermatic
Running production shop and we use these machines, never hit the duty cycle. One problem is ground clamps and wire get too hot especially on pulse. I have Multimatic 255 in my personal shop and I have upsize all lead wires including the short one that goes to drive rolls and swapped for a full on brass clamp.
@themechanicman3865 a vertical up in short circuit lol
indeed, especially for a root pass.. after that is probably okay to pass down
This machine rock at stick welding. Love it!
Switch to pulse with 90-10 gas no spatter and i vertcal down alot
I have the Multimatic 255. Same machine except can stick and DC Tig as well. Both 255s have a 60% duty cycle maxed out. You’ll never hit the duty cycle. Mine replaced my Lincoln 180 after I burned it up making fence panels for a customer. The difference is night and day and I run it on pulse 90% of the time when using the mig process. The stick runs so good I can barely notice the difference between it and my Miller Trailblazer engine drive which is the finest stick welder I’ve personally used. Sure there are Miller 400s and SA 300s and all. I hear they are amazing. Never touched one. For my type of work and needing more generator power to run plasma cutters and electric air compressors at the same time as I’m welding, the Trailblazer cannot be beat IMHO.
The gun is....awesome. totally impressed with that part. I'm having issues with the tig part. Forgot to buy the stick weld attachment. I'll get it next time I order gas.
Hard to beat a new welder! An vertical down is okay as long as your not running flux core lol
I replaced the whip, replaced the rollers and the grounding clamp. I'm still having some voltage issues and I don't know how to diagnose it without loosing my welder for a significant period of time. (send it away for repairs) Because either its a current controller issue or a wire feed motor issue. If i wasn't using the welder professionally on a very regular basis I wouldn't care because it still welds fine, just sometimes it acts up. So I decided to buy a new one. Plus i also stick weld a bunch, which is has & I always wanted to tig weld which is also has. So everything all in one.
The Miller Multimatic 255 is hard to beat for the requirements you laid out. Its a pulsed MIG/stick/DC TIG unit. Up to 350 amps max output means more than enough oomph to do pulse MIG and regular MIG up to 1/2 inch in thickness, and/or self shielded flux core, gas shield flux core (aka "dual shield"), metal core, etc. Plus it is a dandy stick welder, and a decent lift arc, pulsed DC TIG welder. I will admit that I am still trying to get the hand of pulse MIG but I love this machine. The base machine with no cart or TIG set up is $3900
I am pretty satisfied with my Miller Multimatic 255. It does pulse mig quite well. It will also run aluminum without a spool gun if you order the special whip for aluminum. Or you can put almost all Miller spool or push pull guns on this machine. It does mig/pulse mig/tig/pulse tig and stick...DC only
I have a multimatic 255 at home as my personal machine, it’s great, but I do wish it had ac tig, it’s got damn near everything but ac tig… Miller knows gaw damn well if they made the multimatic 255 ac/dc it’d be the last mother fucking machine most of us would ever have to buy… I got the spoolmatic 30a but man fuck that thing, I want ac tig. Now I’m looking for a machine solely for ac tig, perhaps everlast 255 or a primeweld 225… idk
Very similar on my multimatic 255. Either set the material thickness (synergic) or set the WFS from the door chart and manually adjust (435 IPM). Voltage and pulse frequency are set automatically, with an option to control arc length and arc control (width of the arc cone...I suspect it is an inductance setting). The MM255 is super easy to use on pulse MIG. It also does a super nice job of short circuit MIG using the same C-10 gas.
Sorry to reply so late. I don't know how I missed your post. I wound up using GMAW with the 255's Auto-Set feature and 75/25 gas. And I switched plans to adding a horizontal triangulation up high where they had bent, instead of simply welding the perches on (they are also bolted to the frame rails) . I understand basic geometry and angles of force, so this seemed not only wiser but easier. Added plus is that if I ever need to remove the perches, this brace is easy to access with a cutter or torch. See the result below. The Multimatic 255 Auto-Set has to be tried to believe. Every time so far, it's flawless and I don't have to adjust a thing. It sets IPM and voltage, then varies both while I'm running the bead, and I have no idea how it's doing that, but it works. I did have one problem bead but it was because I got lazy and didn't properly clean a rusty old catalyst shell I was welding onto a 4" 16ga exhaust pipe. Spatter. So I stopped and broke out the wire brush, which made the welding easy again. Pic attached before I cleaned it up. I get into a 6011 rod mode out here on the ranch of welding up anything even with old paint on it. I have to stop myself and say "no this is a nice welder and nice job, stop being a wild man."
scott bottoms I went with the 255 for the 350 amps too even tho the top end duty cycle is low. The 220 ac/dc is 60% at 200 amps and the 255 is 240 amps at 60% so yes the 255 is bigger by the output isn’t off by much of the 220
